Yet another study states the benefits of fish oil and this time it is on prostate cancer.  A diet that is supplemented by omega 3 may aide in safeguarding men from a more aggressive form of prostate cancer, according to the research done in Manchester’s Christie Hospital based in the United Kingdom.

Tumor cells can be very malignant when they wander and invade other tissues, including the bone marrow.  This is when prostate cancer reaches a life threatening stage.  Tests done in the laboratory by this research group found that omega 3 fatty acids that are found in fish oil helped prevent the migration and invasion of tumor cells into healthy cells.  Two types of dietary fats were tested on cancer cells in the laboratory, and omega 3 and fatty acids, have been proven to help keep the prostate cancer within the prostate.  Although omega 6 fatty acids are helpful in low concentrations in keeping us healthy omega 3 is the winner in the most important role it plays in keeping illnesses in check, as well as preventing diseases.

Omega 6 fatty acids were found to have increased the spread of tumor cells into other healthy cells whereas fish oil blocked the tumor cells passage, especially to the bone marrow.  Researchers’ consensus about the difference between omega 6 and omega 3 is that omega 6 fatty acids are believed to provide the energy to the tumor cells they need to grow and move into other cells.  Although they are not sure why, they have found that omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil stop the process of movement and growth of the tumor cells.

Dangerous prostate cancers may develop slowly and without symptoms, that is why they are so hard to detect.  Usually when symptoms become evident to the individual the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.  Adding omega 3 fish oil to a man’s diet can help in controlling the cancer, if it does occur.  When the cancer is constricted to the prostate gland it is easier for doctor’s to monitor it and makes treatment easier and more effective.

Although the normal recommended intake of fish for men is about 4 meals of an oily fish per week.  This helps in the prevention of many illnesses and helps control prostate cancer.  It is hard for most people to eat 4 meals of fish per week that is why fish oil works as a great supplement.  Fish oil is the richest source for omega 3 fatty acids that each person needs to maintain a healthy body.  An astounding 85% of the Western world is omega 3 deficient.  Arguably increasing omega 3 intakes can reduce chances of prostate cancer as well as other cancers such as breast cancer.
